Tortuga Rum Pick of the Month

Passenger Pick of the Month Tortuga Rum Company Enjoy this month's Passenger Pick as we explore the story behind the beginning of one of the Cayman’s best known treasures: Tortuga Rum and Rum Cakes. In 1984, while working for Cayman Airways, Captain Robert Hamaty and his wife Carlene, an in-flight supervisor founded the Tortuga Rum Company, Ltd.  They introduced the first rums of the Cayman Islands, primarily to appeal as a souvenir to the growing tourist and cruise passenger business.  The name, Tortuga was chosen from the original name given to the Cayman Islands by Christopher Columbus -- Las Tortugas, the Spanish word meaning turtles -- for all the turtles he saw on the islands’ sandy shores. In 1987, the Hamaty’s opened the first Tortuga duty free liquor store and later that year introduced the now world famous Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cake. For years Carlene had baked rum cakes for special occasions, using a four-generation old family rec...

Passenger Pick of the Month Guy Harvey’s Island Grill Overlooking the picturesque George Town harbor, Guy Harvey’s Island Grill is one of our favorite restaurant experiences on the island.  As this month’s Passenger Pick of the Month, we wanted to learn more about the story behind Guy Harvey’s Island Grill, so recently we caught up with the mastermind, partner Chef Bruno Deluche. PP:  Bruno, it’s great to see you again.  I know you’re excited about some great new changes and additions happening for you and Guy Harvey’s.  Tell us about them. BD:   Well, the biggest news is the opening of Bar Crudo, downstairs from Guy Harvey’s Island Grill . PP:  Downstairs is where the old Harley Davidson store was, right?  BD:   Yes, they wanted to enlarge their store so they moved to a space in the same building, but just behind their original space, freeing up this waterfront location.  PP:  Outstanding locat...

Bar Crudo www.guyharveysgrill.com Just downstairs from Guy Harvey’s Island Grill is the brand new Bar Crudo. Crudo is Italian for “raw,” and the name is appropriate as a good number of items on the menu are raw, including sushi, ceviche, oysters, caviar and many other delicacies. Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of raw, there are ample hot appetizers to choose from as well. You can sit down to a platter of seafood, fish fingers, mozzarella sticks, conch fritters, crab cakes and other mouthwatering entrees. And of course Guy Harvey’s Island Grill is right upstairs! Being right at street level on the water-front, makes it one of the easiest spots to access in down town. There is outdoor seating for Bar Crudo directly across the street on the water. They have Cayman Islands Brewery brews on tap, including Caybrew, CayLight, Ironshore Bock and White Tip. They also offer seasonal beers to try, such as the 345 Stout. The warm atmosphere has already have attracted host of regular...
